Description

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum pays tribute to the great man of the spirit, the writer, thinker, philosopher, politician, traveler Nikos Kazantzakis. It was founded in 1983 by Giorgos Anemoyiannis. It is located in the Central Square of the ancestral village of Nikos Kazantzakis, the historical Varvari (today’s Myrtia).

In 2022, the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum became the 1st museum in Crete and only the 10th in Greece to receive the title “Accredited Museum” from the Ministry of Culture of Greece.

The Permanent Exhibition of the Museum is housed in a space, which was formed where the ancestral home of the Anemoyiannis family was located, a family related to Captain Michalis, the author’s father. In a space where light and shadow alternate, 650 exhibits are presented with a modern look and aesthetic, highlighting the timelessness and universality of Kazantzakis’ thought, offering visitors a fascinating journey into the life, words and reflections of the author. Through physical and digital material, visitors have the opportunity to get to know the author’s personality through his letters and diaries, personal items and souvenirs of his travels, hard-to-find photographs, models of sets and costumes, and performances of his works, from rare audio-visual material, as well as works of art inspired by his literary world.
